Paige Emerson grew up in Maine and was always outdoorsy, but she never saw herself as much of a hiker. When she started hiking in spring of 2020 she found that many of the hikes she wanted to do were labeled “easy” but were actually harder than she expected. This is because the words “easy” or ”difficult” are relative to your body type, prior experience, and fitness level. With this in mind she set out to explore trails and write more realistic reviews from the perspective of someone who is plus sized. Paige believes that anyone can be a hiker.
Since starting Chubby Hiker Reviews in June 2020, Paige has had the opportunity to review over 60 Maine trails. These reviews can be found organized by region on her Instagram page, @chubbyhikerreviews. A downloadable resource with all of the trail reviews will be available at a later date. These reviews include relevant information like trail length, elevation, cell service, parking situation, and whether dogs are permitted. Trail conditions and Paige’s experience while exploring the trail are also mentioned.
Over the past 3 years, Paige has had the opportunity to be featured in 4 articles about her work. These include the Bangor Daily News, Channel 5, the Portland Press Herald, and Every Day Health. More recently, Paige was interviewed for a short segment on Good Morning America.
The future is bright for Chubby Hiker Reviews and Paige would like to expand to add chapters across the country. If this is something you’d be interested in, please follow the instructions to apply.
